Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing

EMDR

When we experience trauma it is very difficult to move forward and live in the present. We often feel numb, unsafe, and deeply unhappy. 

EMDR is a form of therapy that can help you heal from disturbing past experiences and learn to regulate your nervous system. EMDR involves recalling these memories in a calm state and reprocessing them by using bi-lateral stimulation such as side to side eye movement or physical stimulation. 

It can be frightening to recall traumatic memories but EMDR helps you feel as safe as possible in the healing process and feel relief from trauma symptoms. 

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is paying attention, to the present moment, in a nonjudgmental way. Mindfulness helps us be skillful with our thoughts so we are less easily seduced by depression and anxiety. 

Benefits of meditating include responding more thoughtfully in conversations, resisting habitual triggers, reduced stress and anxiety, and ultimately finding more peace and freedom. 

In therapy this could include guided meditations, examining unconscious patterns of the mind, introducing concepts of self-compassion and non-judgement, as well as supporting clients in a home meditation practice.

Trauma-informed care

Trauma-informed care shifts the focus from “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?” Rather than pathologizing symptoms, trauma informed care sees that we adapt to situations in the best way we know how in order to protect ourselves. 

Our goal is to create a supportive and non-judgmental space where clients feel safe and regulated throughout sessions. We believe clients are the experts of their own lives and prioritize autonomy and collaboration. In therapy, we recognize and examine how external factors and dominant discourses impact how we feel about ourselves and our mental health.
